Summary:

The modern economy is characterized by numerous and almost daily technological innovations and changes in the way of communication, organization and control. These changes are often the result of years of research and development activities of individuals or organizations. At the organizational level, the aforementioned activities are integrated into projects that subsequently engage the available: financial, physical and human resources. The success of R&D projects will largely depend on the performance of the managers who manage them – project managers. They need to: provide conditions for seamless research, take care of the project team and their interpersonal relationships, and at the same time pay attention to the financial and project timelines. Their task, then, is not at all easy. The research aims to analyze the roles that project managers have in managing R&D projects. The research methodology included: a descriptive method and content analysis of the available literature of reference national and foreign authors in the field of project management. The research result confirms the assumption that project managers have a crucial and multifunctional role in managing R&D projects.
Keywords: project manager, manager roles, R&D projects, R&D project management.
